Newborn Photography Checklist for Parents

Preparing for a newborn photo shoot at home can be a rewarding experience when you have everything in place. Here’s a comprehensive checklist to ensure a smooth and successful session:

For the Parents:

  1. Snacks and Water:
    • Have snacks and water available for yourself and anyone else present (including siblings and pets). The photo shoot can be lengthy and you’ll need to stay hydrated and energized.
  2. Entertainment for Siblings:
    • Ensure older siblings have books, toys, or electronic devices to keep them entertained during the session.
  3. Extra Clothing:
    • Keep at least one change of clothing for yourself and your baby nearby, in case of any accidents.

For the Baby:

  1. Changing and Feeding Supplies:
    • Diapers
    • Wipes
    • Changing mat
    • Burp cloths
    • Bottles or breastfeeding essentials
    • Any special creams or products you use
  2. Hair Brush:
    • If your newborn has hair, have a brush to tidy up any flyaways.
  3. Toys and Props:
    • Gather any special toys, blankets, or props you’d like included in the photos.
  4. Pacifier:
    • If your baby uses a pacifier, have it ready as it can help soothe them into poses and encourage sleep. If not, it’s not a requirement.

For the Home:

  1. Clean and Declutter:
    • Ensure the areas where you plan to shoot are clean and free from clutter. This includes the nursery, living room, and any other spaces you want to use.
  2. Temperature:
    • Keep the room warm as babies are sensitive to temperature changes and will be more comfortable and cooperative in a warm environment.
  3. Lighting:
    • Maximize natural light by opening curtains and blinds. Photographers often prefer natural light for newborn shoots.
  4. Noise:
    • Create a quiet environment. Turn off loud appliances and keep noise to a minimum to avoid startling the baby.
  5. Backup Space:
    • Have an additional clean and decluttered space ready in case the primary location becomes unsuitable during the shoot.
  6. Pets:
    • If you have pets, decide whether they will be included in the shoot. If not, ensure they are in a separate area to avoid distractions.
  7. Comfort Items:
    • Have blankets, pillows, and any other comfort items on hand to keep the baby cozy during the session.

Miscellaneous:

  1. Communication:
    • Discuss any specific shots or themes you want with the photographer beforehand to ensure they bring any necessary equipment or props.
  2. Schedule:
    • Plan the shoot around the baby’s feeding and nap schedule to maximize the chances of getting calm and content photos.

By preparing these essentials and organizing your home environment, you can help ensure a successful and enjoyable newborn photo shoot.
